MOLLY GODDARD AW20

From fanciful, party-ready frills to voluminous sheer skirts, Molly Goddard’s AW20 show had plenty of twirl-worthy moments

For her autumn/winter 2020 collection presented at London Fashion Week, designer Molly Goddard drew inspiration from her childhood — in particular, a photograph which captures her and her father dressed up for a day at the market in Notting Hill, where she grew up.

The image reveals a man in distressed double denim and a baker boy hat, while his little girl twirls in a ruffled tutu, layered over a knitted jumper and jeans — which is unmistakably Molly, even back then in 1992 — setting a nostalgic tone for the show to come.

Fast forward to the year of 2020 and the occasion of LFW, and the Molly Goddard label debuted a dapper line of menswear, which featured retro-style tailoring in countryside checks and knitted Grandpa-esque cardigans.

The scattering of menswear starred alongside a series of signature candy-coloured Goddard tulle dresses, worn over plaid trousers and busy Fair Isle knits in a colour clashing spectrum.

Styled with thick crepe soles and bow-adorned beanie hats, the AW20 collection is an explosion of ruffles, florals and mismatched ’90s prints — but, it works and more importantly, it puts the joy back into dressing up.
