While Storm Dennis wreaked havoc off the catwalk, at London Fashion Week designers showed an altogether more optimistic outlook for autumn/winter 2020.
From unapologetic femininity, to OTT glamour and the vibrant colour trends guaranteed to lift your mood, read on to see how we will be dressing ourselves to a happier state of mind next season…
HAPPY YELLOW
Allow your AW20 wardrobes to be unceremoniously invigorated with a healthy dose of sunshine – what could be more mood-lifting in the darker months. This season, everyone from Victoria Beckham to Erdem and Petar Petrov to Emilia Wickstead is on the same page when it comes to colour. They all celebrated yellow. From mellow and buttery, to lemon and marigold, there are plenty of different shades to pick from.
ALL CHECKED IN
From heritage to tartan and plaid, checks made a not-so-subtle comeback for Autumn Winter. At Temperley London, plaid was used in elevated tailoring like waistcoats and culottes, while Bora Aksu and Victoria Beckham also showed some beautifully office-appropriate takes on the trend. And while Houndstooth and Prince of Wales checks are usually reserved for coats and suiting, they also made a surprise debut in David Koma’s short and playful party wear.
THE GLAM SQUAD
Sequins almost come as prerequisite for the autumn/winter season – we’ve barely laid to rest our New Year’s Eve outfits and already we’re staring down the barrel of a whole new offering. While it might be a little early to plan your party looks now, there were definitely some style cues worth taking note of. Unabashed glamour is back, there is no doubting that, but this time around it’s definitely more modest – so look for high-necklines and long sleeves. Michael Halpern is London’s King of Bling but the likes of Preen and David Koma also showed off their lustre for sequins.
POWERED BY PINK
From punchy fuchsia pink to Millennial pink and everything in between, there’s no hiding from the fact pink is having a major fashion moment on the Autumn Winter catwalks. Once tainted by stereo types, it’s becoming increasingly more sophisticated thanks to its high fashion treatment by respected designers such as Halpern and Shrimps. Erdem opted for a pale and shimmering shade to apply to a delicately ruffled dress while Roland Mouret’s chic tailoring is an apt reminder that women in power can wear pretty pinks, too.
VOLUME & RUFFLES
More is more where volume is concerned. There were two trends at play here – the first being ruffles which when delicately layered create bundles of drama and big shapes. Molly Goddard led the change of ruffle-flaunting designers – Roksanda, 16 Arlington and Ashley Williams also favoured this light and more romantic yet still maximalist vision. The second is the type of mega volume created by super bubble hems – it was Simone Rocha and Richard Quinn who championed this fantastically glamorous look with aplomb.
