Birthstones are a huge trend in fine jewellery right now, and for those lucky enough to be born in February, the amethyst is the gem of the month. Associated with both love and power, it takes its name from the Ancient Greek word methustos, which translates as ‘intoxicated’, and comes in a spectrum of colours from light green to, more commonly, vivid purple that makes a gorgeous addition to any jewellery box.

What’s more amethyst, or purple quartz, is a relatively hard stone and ranks a respectable 7 on the Mohs scale, following diamond in the top slot at 10, sapphire and ruby at 9, and topaz at 8.
