Designers reach new heights with trousers and denim for SS24
Every millennial has been emotionally scarred by low-rise trousers. Thanks to pop superstars of the noughties, low-rise everything reigned supreme, with Generation Z leading its recent (read: unwelcome) revival. While low-rise jeans and trousers were the epitome of It Girl fashion, high-waisted alternatives were ridiculed for being frumpy, matronly and unflattering until the 2010s when they were finally accepted by the mainstream. The comfort! The security! The ability to bend over without overexposing ourselves!
For spring/summer 2024, designers have experimented with foundations of fashion, transforming workwear trousers and off-duty denim through ultra-high waists that are at once playful and practical. Loewe – as one would expect – offers over-the-top iterations with a rib-skimming silhouette, while Hermès presents a relaxed paper-bag trouser and Max Mara reinterprets the cargo.
