Street Style File: The Dos and Don’ts Of Rocking Double Denim

1 min read

What was once considered a fashion faux pas (remember Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake’s infamous denim outfits at the 2001 American Music Awards?), double denim has woven its way back into style thanks to celebrities like Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid, as well as our favourite street style stars. But before you put on a full denim suit, here are some dos and don’ts to follow.

DO: Play with colour
If you’re new to double denim, try pairing different shades of the fabric together such as a light denim jacket with a dark denim skirt or a pair of black jeans and a chambray shirt.

DON’T: Wear denim accessories
Keep your denim confined to your clothing and stay far away from denim shoes, hats, handbags, or any other denim inspired accessory.

DO: Think about balance
Break up your look with wardrobe staples like a vintage tee or a white button down shirt.

DON’T: Be inspired by Western films
When you think of double denim, images of cowboys instantly come to mind, which isn’t a good thing. So to ensure you stay as far away as possible from the rodeo, avoid accessories like cowboy boots, cowboy hats, bolo ties, and Western belts when doubling up on denim.

DO: Dress up your double denim
Don’t be afraid to elevate your look with statement heels, a tuxedo blazer, embellishments, or even some faux fur.
