Miuccia Prada treats the weary fashion crowd to a Miu Miu closing act they’ll never forget.

The Italian master of sartorial storytelling fused the aura of Fifties Hollywood glamour with the failed opulence of bankrupt aristocrats, looking on the bright side of desperate times. Imagine Scarlett O’Hara and her unforgettable green velvet and gold tassel draped dress. Yet at Miu Miu there is no hint of fabric borrowed from curtains: Miuccia’s woman instead invades the closet of the man of the house, wearing shirts, boxer shorts, argyle cardigans and hunting jackets with extravagant fur coats and utility rain jackets reimagined in opera coat proportions.
The success of the theme lay in the attention to details. Each look was customised with whatever was “lying around”, like grandma’s pearls, an old pocket square; a collegiate patch that belonged to someone named “Gene”; bedroom slippers bedecked in the family jewels, bejewelled trims on baroque upholstery and Rosie the Riveter-style jean jackets.
Gigi and Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Joan Smalls, Sara Sampaio, Taylor Hill, Binx Walton, and Irina Shayk played the distressed mistresses on the runway, joined by Emily Ratajkowski, Adriana Lima, and Lara Stone making an appearance in floor-sweeping satin dresses.
