In Love with Coco

The autumn/winter 2016 show was Karl Lagerfeld’s love letter to Madame Coco and her bourgeois French values. Not only was the venue a replica of her atelier, the collection was full of quintessential Chanel tropes like the tweed suit, little black dresses, ropes of pearls, riding hats, camellias and the CC logo. It seemed like a throwback of the fashion maven’s style, updated with contemporary tweaks and bright colours. The iconic Chesterfield aka quilting was evident throughout the show from the models’ eyelids to the oversized blanket coats.

Chanel’s Quilted Eye

A textured eye inspired by the label’s iconic quilted handbags is destined to catch on. Models like Bhumika Arora and Lindsey Wixson rocked the cross-hatched lids that were traced using an actual quilted fabric by makeup artist extraordinaire Tom Pecheux.

Stacks of Pearls

Multiple layers of stacked pearls would definitely get Mademoiselle Coco’s stamp of approval. We’re also intrigued by the bowling hats with pearl beaded straps. Are we looking at next season’s IT accessory?

Front row only

After a series of fashion shows that got bigger and more OTT with each season, most recently the Chanel Supermarket and Airlines, this time, the presentation implied a trope of old-time couture. Lagerfeld’s favourite Grand Palais was turned into a giant pared-back, elegant show space, with a “front row only” concept, where guests could take a closer look at the fineries of the collection in a venue similar to an old-school atelier.
