Ten Minutes With Photographer Rana Khadra

3 min read

Photographer and regional communications and colour marketing manager at Jotun, Rana Khadra’s life is full of colour. Here, she shares what she’s reading, her secrets for staying motivated and the Dubai neighbourhood she frequents for inspiration

What is an ideal day like in your life?

Meditation, exercise, coffee and a conversation with my husband and sister. The beach, my brother, a good book and friends. If my day has some or all of those then I’m good to go!

What is your secret to remaining motivated and balanced?

Meditation and gratitude. My motto is “no matter what you’re doing, you’re doing it anyway so make the most of it and enjoy it.”

What are the core values you uphold in your company?

Care, respect, boldness and loyalty.

Where do you find yourself being most creative for work?

When I’m out of my comfort zone, when I’m in a new place meeting new people, when I get myself out of routine, and when I’m learning something new.

What are your top rules for entertaining at home?

Firstly you should be having fun too; secondly good music; thirdly making guests feel at home; and last but not least, making sure everyone knows their guests are welcome too.

What are some of your most treasured pieces in your home?

An art piece made by my brother as a wedding gift —he crafted it from beads I gifted him from Sudan. Also our collection of pots, an antique coffee grinder that my father gave me, and a collection of stones that my husband and I collect when we travel.

If you could buy a house anywhere else in the world, where would it be?

Everyone that knows me knows that when I come back from most of my trips I usually say I want to live there, but I felt it the most in Cape Town and Andalusia.

How would you describe your personal style?

I’d say gypsy meets classic. I’m definitely not a jeans person! I like big earrings, big hair and big skirts one day, and a nice tailored suit with a sleek ponytail and sneakers the next. Generally I have to really relate to a trend to follow it.

What’s your go-to look for the 9-5?

Sneakers, a blazer and simple T-shirt with a skirt or pants.

What will we find in your jewellery box?

Honestly? I never owned much jewellery until I got married and started to get gifted some pieces. You’ll find some watches, but I spend most of my money on experiences.

How many pairs of shoes do you own?

Now you’re making me count! I’d say around 40 pairs.

What’s your daily skincare routine?

A face wash, moisturiser and sometimes toner, but I know I should start doing more.

Where’s your favourite place to find inspiration and creativity in the UAE?

The desert is my favourite place in the UAE, I just love being in the middle of it. You’ll also find me in Satwa and Karama, just walking around taking photos.
