The collection had an easy fluidity and breezy confidence
For SS19, Valentino’s Pierpaolo Piccioli reflected on the idea of paradise, and especially about the way artists throughout history have gone to these far away lands to explore their art and their identities. He warned, however, that this collection was not an exercise in escapism. Instead, it was about looking at the world from within, bearing in mind that freedom is not escape but presence.
For the occasion, iconic 90s supermodel Kristen McMenamy opened the show wearing a long black taffeta dress in a loose silhouette, with a pair of gold hoop earrings. The last time the model was seen on the runway was for Atelier Versace’s spring/summer 2013 show.
After a series of all black cotton looks, the collection gradually morphed into an explosion of colour in the form of sequined and feathered chiffon, and silk and tulle dresses. There was also no shortage of larger-than-life silhouettes, playful florals, and over-the-top accessories, which included giant hats and leather sandals studded with feathers.
Bejewelled eyes and lips, in shades that complemented the clothes, care of makeup legend Pat McGrath showcased beauty escapism at its finest. Kaia Gerber donned the most elaborate of all the looks, with green Swarovski crystals placed in a rounded wing shape that extended across the brow.
