Jameel Prize 5: Bahraini Designer Hala Kaiksow makes the cut for this year’s edition
Held every two years, the Jameel Prize is an international award for contemporary art and design inspired by Islamic tradition. Organised in collaboration with the Victoria and Albert Museum, the £25,000 prize is awarded to artists and designers working across fashion, architecture and art. One of the 8 artists shortlisted in its fifth edition is Hala Kaiksow, a young fashion designer from Bahrain. Kaiksow, a trained artist and sculptor, is known for her custom hand woven fabrics and use of age-old craft traditions. The designer, who self taught herself how to weave, is bringing back the dying art as she spins life into raw linen, silk and hemp to create her otherworldly patterns and textures. Kaiksow’s utilitarian approach to dressing infused with an eco-conscious design aesthetic has garnered her a spot in the coveted Jameel Prize this year. The designer will show samples of her work in a special exhibition at the V&A opening on June 28 before touring on to other venues.
