From sparkling silver to feathered trains, we spotted many a new season treasure ruling the red carpet at the 2016 Met Gala. Here's our pick of the most noteworthy trends at this year's 'Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology' Costume Institute Gala.

Tech Check

The ultimate contribution to this year’s technologically advanced dress code was an illuminating Zac Posen ball gown, donned by an ethereal-looking Claire Danes who glided down the red carpet in a fairytale silhouette juxtaposed with LED lights. Another mind-boggling high-tech-meets-high-fashion moment was spotting Karolina Kurkova in a floral appliqué Marchesa dress designed with IBM features that lit up in multi-colours.

Silver Sirens

Metallic palliettes, silver plumes, shiny surfaces, beading and many other adaptations of tech-inspired textures made appearances on the red carpet, with a nod to futuristic magnitudes. Olivier Rousteig’s Balmain Army marched down the runway with Cindy Crawford, Jourdan Dunn, Alessandra Ambrosio and Kim Kardashian in glimmering versions of metallic corsetry, futuristic undertones of chain details and lots of sequins.

New Lengths

Amidst the plethora of sweeping floor-length gowns, we notice a shift towards a decidedly casual yet striking cocktail dresses on the red carpet. We have Nicolas Ghesquière to thank for last night’s most memorable dresses including Taylor Swift’s sparkly silver number that embodied the essence of a modern cyborg babe and Alicia Vikander’s asymmetrical mixed-media dress with red leather panelling, both custom made by Louis Vuitton.

Peacocking

If there’s ever a time and place to peacock, its this one. And A-list beauties took the opportunity by the reins and flocked down the red carpet in brightly feathered ball gowns. Zoe Saldana’s Dolce&Gabbana Alta Moda dress with the dramatically lengthy train flowed flawlessly behind her as she arrived on the Met steps, while Rita Ora’s show-stopping Vera Wang feathered metallic gown put the artist on top of our best-dressed list.

Top That Train

While we were still recovering from Rihanna‘s Guo Pei train from last year’s Met Gala, this year celebrities brought their best train game to the red carpet to put up a good fight.

Work It

On a very fashion forward night, these brave A-listers defied convention and showed up to walk the famed Museum staircase in some very chic pants. We were particularly intrigued with Emma Watson’s choice of Calvin Klein pant suits made from sustainable materials that doubled for a gown with its yard-long train.
