Pierpaolo Piccioli delivered a collection full of red tulle and designs celebrating Japanese culture

On Tuesday night, Valentino held its first ever co-ed pre-fall show in Tokyo, Japan and according to the brand’s creative director, Pierpaolo Piccioli, the easiest way to look as chic as possible is to wear an all-red outfit. The show had a total of 90 looks and 28 of those were all red (with five that were red-and-black printed).

According to Piccioli, the collection was inspired by Japan, particularly the concept of wabi-sabi or imperfect beauty. "Western culture is about symmetry, perfection, static beauty, while wabi-sabi is more close to the idea of harmony, of inner grace. Time goes by and it adds, it doesn’t take away," explained the designer at a preview of the collection.

A series of red tulle dresses opened the show, creating an obvious link between the house’s signature colour and that of the circle of the sun symbolised on the Japanese flag. Many of the gowns were ruffled, pleated or layered which showed both volume and movement. Models Kaia Gerber and Adut Akech closed the show wearing coordinating red ruffle looks, while the runway was showered with red fabric rose petals.

Although it may be a bold look, going red all over is incredibly stylish and perfect for the festive season. The key is to mix soft, billowing fabrics with structured details. And remember less is more when it comes to accessories.
