NYFW SS18: Day One

Day one of NYFW brought a handful of runway shows and studio presentations. From an emphasis on clean silhoutetes at Narciso Rodriguez to an upbeat youthful energy at PH5, there was lots to take in and plenty of items to covet, perhaps nowhere more so than at Tom Ford who knocked things out of the park with his sultry and sartorially strong collection. We round up the main highlights here.

Tom Ford: Aside from reinventing Gucci in the Nineties and making his mark at YSL, Tom Ford went on to redefine menswear with his eponymous brand that forms the bread and butter of his business. Applying his meticulous tailoring techniques to his womenswear collection Mr. Ford presented an ode to modern day power dressing that oozed unapologetic sex appeal. The razor sharp suit jackets, tailored shorts and trousers and hip bone-baring bodysuits will be seen on It Girls and strong women the world over.

Pamella Roland: Citing the timelessness of Monaco and its iconic women as her reference point, Pamella Roland sent out gown after gown in an array of styles, colours and cuts. Embodying decadence through fringing, feathers, embellishment and layers of tulle, Roland brought an unabashed glamour that we're sure to see at the upcoming awards shows later this year.

Rosetta Getty: With American artist Georgia O'Keeffe serving as her source of inspiration, Rosetta Getty crafted a collection rife with gently oversized proportions and monochromatic colours which were punctuated briefly with shots of red, blue and brown. There was a very abstract and modern feel to the clothes which Getty does so well. One could imagine today's new age bohemians and creative types adopting the asymmetric tunics, printed tees and strapless dresses as their new season uniforms.

Rachel Comey: There was an urban uniformity to Rachel Comey's collection with a wide array of modern day staples on show. Pleated and fringing techniques carried a free-spirited optimism while midi skirts, culottes, ruffled organza blouses and washed out denim hit all the right notes for multifunctional daywear.

PH5: After making their NYFW debut last season, Wei Lin and Mijia Zhang - the creative duo behind this knitwear-centric brand - showcased a lively, fun and above all wearable collection with plenty of promise. The colourful hues and fluid silhouettes will look equally good with sneakers as they would with a chic pair of ankle strap pumps.

Zac Posen: Young designer Zac Posen chose to present his collection in his studio. Falling distinctly into day and evening wear, the former category was made up of incredibly pretty dresses and shorts sets in tones of blush, sky blue and white with a decidedly nostalgic feel to them. A favourite with the entertainment industry's biggest and brightest stars, the evening component of Posen's collection held plenty of red carpet appeal striking a congruous harmony between demure and dramatic.

Narciso Rodriguez: Another designer who eschewed the runway for a showroom presentation was Mr. Rodriguez whose 19-look collection was all about clean lines. Ultra-modern silhouettes in block shades of rouge, black and white created a contemporary, no-fuss aesthetic that will function just as well in a corporate environment as an after-work one.
