Every season tells a story and this winter the magic of fairytales is the muse at Dior for Autumn/Winter 21-22. With hooded capes, remastered tartans and modern-day princess dresses, this collection spells drama, telling a story all on its own
Decades after we read our first fairytales, we still vividly remember the Big Bad Wolf hiding in the forest waiting for Little Red Riding Hood or the Evil Queen and her poison apple. The bewitching danger of these tales draw us in long after our childhood has passed. Fairytales are handed-down through generations and their messages transcend time. These stories served as the inspiration for Dior’s creative director, Maria Grazia Chiuri. The AW21 collection featured perfectly tailored pieces fit for a modern-day princess; a red hooded cape with trousers, jeans paired with rose-tipped shoes and a toy soldier’s uniform complete with blue cashmere coat payed homage to all the stories we know so well.
Challenging the ‘damsel in distress’ notion of the women in these fairytales, Maria Grazia Chiuri ensured the subjects of this story be strong and undauntable. Titled Disturbing Beauty, the Christian Dior show was filmed in the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles. The hall was lined with artworks by Italian artist Silvia Giambrone. A dramatic end to the show featured an evening gown fit for a princess, with all the froth and flowers one would expect from a costume. The dress was designed and made by hand, and made for a very happy ending.
The enchanting AW21 ready-to-wear collection was captured by Mox Santos for MOJEH showcasing the mystery of a midnight-blue hue, sophisticated sparkles and Maria Grazia Chiuri's reinvention of cannage.
