This year’s Met Gala ceremoniously opened the New York museum’s latest exhibition, China: Through The Looking Glass and some stars embraced the theme more than others. From subtle oriental ornaments to all-out Chinese influences, stars took to the red carpet in an array of show-stopping designs.

Karen Elson, Kate Hudson, Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Sarah Jessica Parker were all daring in their accessories

For a soft, feminine feel some turned to flower arrangements to bring in the orient; Selena Gomez created a stir with a live orchid flower crown.

Others resembled modern geishas taking to the red carpet. One superstar couple was surprisingly late and photographers were ordered to stay at their posts for an extra 90 minutes to get a shot of Beyonce and Jay-Z.

Emily Blunt, Fan BingBing, Georgie May Jagger, Irina Shayk, Karolina Kurkova and Lily Aldridge all took outfit inspiration from this years exhibition

This year Anna Wintour introduced a no selfie or social media rule, but stars couldn’t resist the allure of the camera, with Justin Bieber being one of the first to break the not-so-strict rule. Meanwhile, a bevy of young models, designers and actresses challenged the legendary Oscars 2014 selfie with a group bathroom-break photo. Jourdan Dunn, Lily Donaldson, Joan Smalls, Behati Prisloo, Kendall Jenner, Alexander Wang, Cara Delevingne, Zoe Kravitz, Bella Hadid and Emily Ratajkowski all managed to squeeze into the shot!
