Diamond Shine

What better outfit for a time of reflection and joy than the shimmering highlights of a metallic gown? Metallics took a ladylike turn in recent seasons, as silver paillettes and subtle crystals offered a calmer sheen that replaced traditional sequins. Colour tones from pastel pink to deep gold continue to reign, while duchesse satin and underscores of chiffon suggest bridal notes without putting you in danger of upstaging the newlyweds. Well, almost.

Dark Darling

Throw the wedding etiquette book out with the confetti and wear an elegant midnight hue. Ideal for formal weddings where the celebrations continue long into the night, these dresses add a black-tie panache that is a little more daring than the usual cocktail dress fare. Texture, florals and hints of sheer fabric add a lighter touch to a dark palette. Contrasting accessories and a shorter hemline will do the same. For the truly maverick guest, try a Narciso Rodriguez jumpsuit with exposed back detailing to demonstrate a fashion-forward flair that will have everyone else wishing they’d done the same.

Embrace the Romance

If your day-to-day wardrobe consists of androgynous tailoring or sporty separates you may want to walk a more romantic path when the next embossed invitation lands at your door. Anna Kendrick’s blush toned Monique Lhullier gown is dreamily ethereal and with a simple hairstyle and well-edited jewellery (Fred Leighton) its volume is never in danger of overpowering her petite frame. Gucci’s pre-Fall collection includes more than one example of the ideal uber-floral dress in a simpler silhouette – perfect for the free-spirited guest. Even better if it’s a destination wedding, where blooms, embroidery and whimsical tiered styles are just right for celebrating with loved ones.
