The French fashion house announced it would stop manufacturing products made from snakes, crocodiles, lizards and more
On Monday, ahead of its highly anticipated pre-fall Metiers d’Art show at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, Chanel announced that it would no longer use exotic skins in its future creations. That includes crocodile, lizard, snake and galuchat, which comes from the skin of sharks and stingrays. The fashion house said it would also cease the use of fur.
The brand said difficulty obtaining responsibly sourced skins was a deciding factor in its decision to stop using exotic skins. "We are continually reviewing our supply chains to ensure they meet our expectations of integrity and traceability," Chanel said in a statement. "In this context, it is our experience that it is becoming increasingly difficult to source exotic skins which match our ethical standards."
Chanel is the latest in an impressively long list of fashion heavyweights to ban fur and other animal products from its designs. In the last year alone, Gucci, Versace, Burberry, Coach and Diane von Furstenberg, among others, have all vowed to go fur-free.
