Celebrity hairstylist Deena Alawaid takes us through the top three AW23 hair trends that will have you nailing those perfect party locks in no time, from a bit of bling to the cut of the season

Accessorise All Areas

David Koma

If you’re looking to add a little razzle dazzle to your beauty look without the commitment of a colour change or cut, this season’s obsession with hair accessories is an easy way to elevate your style to the next level. “I always love adding something dainty so it doesn’t take away from the overall look,” explains Deena. “Try incorporating your accessories to jazz up a ponytail, or even just adding a chic headband can be very effective.”

Brooches are most certainly back, with the hairstyles at Chanel, David Koma and Eudon Choi offering a glamorous way to wear heirloom pieces in a new way, while those looking for something a little more subtle should opt for a slick black hair ribbon. Be it thick, skinny, straight or textured, they were big news at the likes of Dior, Zimmermann and Max Mara, while everyone from Emma Watson to Hailey Bieber have also been out rocking their own interpretation of the trend in recent weeks.

Slippery When Wet

Julian MacDonald

Lacquered locks were everywhere this season, seen on a whole host of catwalks including Etro, Julien Macdonald, Vaquera, Diesel, Fendi and more. A low-maintenance hairstyle that doesn’t take a village, it’s a trend that works across all hair types and, most importantly, it’s seriously stylish. “I think the wet look when done properly always looks so sultry and bold,” says Deena. “It’s very versatile, and can be worn from day to night too, which makes it a winner.”

Whether you opt for liquidy flowy lengths or a slicked-back high bun to achieve that glass-hair look, choose products that will leave your hair looking wet as opposed to greasy, like a matte pomade and some styling oil. You also want to keep your hair relatively flexible, so avoid mousse. “The number one must-have for a wet look is the Color Wow Pop and Lock serum,” adds Deena.“It will stay wet looking all night, and not get crispy at all.

The Big Bang

Erdem

There’s always something refreshing about switching up your style for the new year, and for 2024, a fringe is one of the biggest hair trends. Be it the shag style à la Emporio Armani, the impactful short bangs we saw over at Erdem or the more classic schoolgirl fringe loved by Bella Hadid, there are a myriad of ways to refresh how you look and feel this season. “I am absolutely loving the curtain fringe right now,” says Deena. “It’s a strong trend this season andI don’t think it’s going anywhere. It’s so effortless, fun, frames your face perfectly and just gives your effortless look a little bit of elevation.” A word of warning, however: “It’s important to remember that a fringe is a commitment, so you’ll need to be willing to change up your daily styling routine!” she adds.
