Ocean Inspired Jewellery To Style Up The Sands

May 30, 2021 | 3 min read

The ocean-inspired trend has made its way to fine jewellery this season, with designers diving beneath the waves for their most eclectic inspiration yet.

When Donatella Versace staged an under-the-sea themed show for SS21, it was clear from the sandy seabed catwalk, splashy coral and seahorse prints and just-jumped-out-the-water hair that the ocean was going to play a huge part in our spring/summer wardrobes. Unsurprisingly, the trend has also made its way to fine jewellery this season, with some of the most divine houses diving beneath the waves for their most eclectic inspiration yet.

Think urchins, starfish, crabs and sea stars, pieces reminiscent of crystal blue waters and lapping waves give off a distinctly warm weather vibe, with sapphires, blue opals, emeralds and more gracing our wrists, necklines, fingers and earlobes, conjuring up these treasures of the sea in ethereal combinations.

While Versace would be a good place to start – think cowrie shell necklaces sprinkled with gems and sequin starfish earrings – you have plenty of designers to choose from the season. Think turtles at Tiffany & Co., shells at Saint Laurent, fish at Jil Sander and the cutest 24kt gold plated crab set with glittering white and green crystals at Begum Khan to get you started, Ariel is the season’s biggest style inspiration for very good reason.

Also getting in on the act, Bottega Veneta is giving off a distinct ocean vibe with numerous jewellery pieces this season, our favourite being creative director Daniel Lee’s shell-pendant enamel beaded necklace you can pick up at Matches Fashion, which is crafted in Italy from intricately knotted cord punctuated by yellow enamel beads and adorned with a charming shell pendant.
