MOJEH takes a behind the scenes look at the bag’s design and construction process
The Dior Book Tote bag in embroidered Dior Oblique canvas is the perfect summer carryall thanks to its spacious interior. It has been spotted all over Instagram since its original debut at the brand’s spring/summer 2018 presentation and has also appeared throughout the house’s cruise 2019 collection.
To create the bag’s relaxed appearance and graphic motif, Maria Grazia Chiuri plunged into the house archives, drawing inspiration from a hypnotic drawing made by Marc Bohan in 1967. Demanding more than 37 hours of work and over one-and-a-half million stitches, each Dior Book Tote in Dior Oblique canvas is entirely embroidered in a family-run workshop in Italy. Under the seamstresses’ watchful eyes, sewing machines stitch the grey ground, producing beige motifs then midnight blue letters. Then, lasers are used to trim the excess threads and the edges are sewn to ensure precision and strength.
The next steps in its creation take place in Dior’s own leatherworking ateliers in the Florentine hinterland. Here, the artisan begins by mounting the two handles that are to be sewn on the front and back panels of the bag and that, due to their length, allow for hand or shoulder wear. The artisan then assembles the bag’s lateral and central parts and does a final quality control before the bag arrives in boutiques.
Dior's Book Tote isn't their only bag which is currently making waves among the fashion set. The recently relaunched Dior Saddle bag is also an influencer must have this season.
