Here’s Why The Tuxedo Should Be Your New Festive Staple

Dec 08, 2020 | 3 min read

Tuxedos are understated, elegant, oh-so-slightly rebellious, and exude individuality and non-conformity in a way a sparkling cocktail dress never can.

From Alexander McQueen to David Koma, designers are embracing the trusty tuxedo this season, and here's why you should too...

The festive season is one that usually calls for sequins, sequins, and even more sequins. Did we mention sequins? However with everything 2020 has thrown at us, it might be the year to embrace something new. That’s why we’re rooting for the trusty tuxedo as our wardrobe staple this Christmas.

While women wearing suits is not a new phenomenon, a well-structured tuxedo will always turn heads. Be it a family meal at home or a glamorous NYE bash, they are understated, elegant, oh-so-slightly rebellious, and exude individuality and non-conformity in a way a sparkling cocktail dress never can.

Reminiscent of free-spirited fashion icons such as Patti Smith, Kate Moss and Charlotte Rampling, the streamlined silhouette will also show off your figure in a way that isn’t obvious, but is extremely effective.

This year’s festive favourite comes embellished a la David Koma, who added a smattering of jewels to the top of his black tuxedo jacket. Speaking of black, while colour palettes traditionally stick to the classic monochrome – look to Dior and Christopher Kane for a top-to-toe white tux - we did see pops of velvet, teal blue and rich burgundy satin that will add a little oomph to your look.

Case in point? King of the two-piece Tom Ford sent models down the runway in high-shine pantsuits, while Giorgio Armani’s velvet ensemble ticks all the right boxes. If you really want to go all out, look to Alexander McQueen’s OTT tux jacket with voluminous sleeves and red accents.

And if you’re still craving that seasonal glitter? Simply wear a sequined slip dress or vest under your tuxedo jacket and you’re good to go.
