The Red Carpet Returns: Five Trends To Love From Venice Film Festival

2 min read

As the first major international film festival since the coronavirus pandemic, the 77th annual Venice Film Festival (which began on September 1) proves that romance isn’t dead. With fabulously frothy gowns, dreamy embellished dresses and statement silhouettes that swish in the breeze, the Italian film festival has already produced a series of standout (socially distanced) looks set to revive your red carpet fantasies. Here are the trends to swoon-over.

Red Alert
Fiery hues of rouge are running up from the floor at the Venice Film Festival 2020, with stars adorned in top-to-toe crimson, scarlet and ruby. Arizona Muse wore a frothy Alberta Ferretti dress, Madelina Ghanea opted for a beaded Zuhair Murad gown and Vanessa Kirby wore a stunning satin haute couture piece by Valentino.

The Night Garden
Embellished florals are cropping up across the red carpet — but these looks step away from pretty petals and shift toward moody blooms that can be worn into the night. Cate Blanchett says it’s chic to repeat, re-wearing an Alexander McQueen look first spotted at the 2016 BAFTAs and Stacy Martin makes a case for gothic glamour in an embroidered Louis Vuitton silhouette.

Greek Dressing
Putting a fresh spin on the grecian goddess look, stars have opted for elegantly draped dresses is soft shades of cornflower blue, peach and pearl. Alberta Ferretti elevates plunging necklines with intricate embellishments on the shoulder (as seen on Lotte Verbeek and Frida Aasen), while Etro created a cross bodice in printed silk chiffon and gold thread (worn by model Mary Fall Diba).

White Out
Tilda Swinton (in Chanel), Paola Turani (in Naeem Khan) and Ester Expósito (in Etro), are just some of the stars who have made a statement in all-white ensembles. Swinton’s long-flared coat in white silk crêpe and guipure lace with floral motifs from Chanel’s SS20  haute couture collection, was particularly noteworthy for its sheer elegance and grace.

Shimmer And Shine
The return of the red carpet ushers in a wave of glitz and glamour. From Maya Hawke dressed in an embellished Atelier Versace mermaid gown (dripping in degradé of Swarovski crystals and lustrous gold-tone appliqué), to Elodie in sparkling Messika jewels and Sara Serraiocco in a glittering Valentino gown, high-shine looks are back and better than ever before.
