The 2024 Met Gala exhibition has been revealed and it promises a sartorial journey through time

Time really flies, doesn’t it? It seems like just yesterday we were gushing over the Karl Lagerfeld-inspired looks at the 2023 Met Gala, from Jared Leto dressing as Choupette to Doja Cat meowing at reporters. However, fashion waits for no-one, and details have begun to trickle in about the 2024 Met Gala. What is the exhibition at next year’s gala? What is the dress code? Who are the hosts?

The Met Gala is an ultra-exclusive annual event that takes place on the first Monday of May. The event is a fundraiser and coincides with the opening of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute fashion exhibition. Approximately 600 invitees – from designers and their muses to celebrities, tastemakers and politicians – descend upon the red carpet in droves, each showcasing their interpretation of the dress code. As for what happens behind closed doors, nobody really knows. There is a no-phone and no-social-media policy (which has been broken before thanks to a Jenner bathroom selfie), but celebrities have disclosed that there is a dinner, performance and time to explore the exhibition.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced that the exhibition at the centre of the 2024 Met Gala is titled Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion and will feature items from the Costume Institute’s permanent collection, including never-before-seen pieces. The exhibit includes archival designs by Schiaparelli, Dior and Alexander McQueen, among others, as well as AI-integrated installations. The exhibition itself will be moulded around three zones – Land, Sea and Sky – according to Andrew Bolton, curator in charge of the costume institute.

The nature of the exhibition leads us to speculate that we will see plenty of archival creations on the red carpet or reinterpretations of rare, historical pieces that are too fragile to be worn. There could also be an element of theatre on the carpets – think: Lady Gaga’s tearaway ensemble or Zendaya’s light-up gown – taking in the theme of transformation and renewal.

As for the dress code and hosts, they have yet to be revealed, so stay tuned to MOJEH for updates.
