Ahead of the Chanel Spring/Summer 2022 ready-to-wear show, photographers Inez & Vinoodh captured black-and-white portraits of five friends of the House in Virginie Viard’s latest collection, namely Lily-Rose Depp, Rebecca Dayan, Quannah Chasinghorse-Potts, Alma Jodorowsky and Jennie. They were photographed both in-front of and behind the camera, embodying the photographer and model.

Photography – both the act of taking the photograph and the resulting image – was the inspiration behind the Chanel Spring/Summer 2022 presentation, which took place at Paris’ Grand Palais Éphémère. The backdrop for the evening was a black-and-white portrait of model Vivienne Rohner taking a photograph and was chosen by Virginie Viard “because fashion is about clothes, models and photographers… It’s a magical object and a sexy gesture, which evokes so many memories. I used to love the sound of flashbulbs going off at the shows in the eighties, when the models were on a raised runway. I wanted to recapture that emotion.” The creative director was also inspired by the late Karl Lagerfeld, who captured Chanel campaigns himself.

The collection had elements of nineties nostalgia with preppy pastel suits à la Clueless, fishnet skirts and multicolour crochet jackets as well as flare-heeled Mary-Janes. Kaleidoscopic prints appeared on airy fabrics, the models’ movement making the dresses dance, alongside butterfly wings adorning black chiffon. Elsewhere, simple yet sophisticated swimwear was worn both alone and as bodysuits – the ultimate spring/summer staple.

Large, plush accessories complete the collection; soft quilted handbags with oversized hardware, practical shoppers and sandals which Virginie Viard notes “remind us of pirate shoes.” Relive the Chanel Spring/Summer 2022 Paris Fashion Week show in the gallery above.Watch the film
