Details of the upcoming Met Gala first broke in November and unveiled the theme - and central exhibition - of Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion. Now, the 2024 Met Gala co-chairs and dress code have finally been revealed.
Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny and Chris Hemsworth are the co-chairs for the 2024 Met Gala (alongside Vogue Editor-in Chief Anna Wintour), while Honorary Chairs are LOEWE creative director Jonathan Anderson and TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew. It will be Jennifer Lopez's fourteenth time on the carpet, Bad Bunny's third appearance, Zendaya's sixth visit and first since 2019, and Chris Hemsworth's first Met Gala.
The 2024 Met Gala exhibition Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion will feature items from the Costume Institute’s permanent collection, including never-before-seen pieces dating as far back as the 17th century, with an underlying theme of fragility. The exhibit includes archival designs by Schiaparelli, Dior and Alexander McQueen, among others, as well as AI-integrated installations. The exhibition itself will be moulded around three zones – Land, Sea and Sky – according to Andrew Bolton, curator in charge of the costume institute.
As for what to expect on the red carpet, MOJEH predicts plenty of fauna-inspired gowns, as the official dress code is Garden of Time, inspired by a 1962 short story written by J.G Ballard. While Vogue has shared the meaning behind the dress code - "it has nothing to do with the Brothers Grimm or Disney, but is a celebration of clothing and fashion so fragile it can't ever be worn again" - we anticipate some on-the-nose ensembles. Could this mean archival floral looks? Will the more outrageous celebrities (Doja Cat, we are looking at you) attend covered only in leaves? We will have to wait for the first Monday in May to find out.
