Snow days, but not as you know them. For AW21, Miu Miu conquered the elements to debut its Brave Hearts collection and it is new-world fashion at its peak
After eighteen months of indoor dressing, Miuccia Prada ventured into the great outdoors for a sartorial adventure like no other. The House gathered its Miu Miu Mountain Club in the powdery peaks of the Italian Dolomites to showcase Brave Hearts: a fearless yet fanciful collection inspired by the strength, fragility and unparalleled beauty of landscapes.
A nod to the exploratory nature of post-pandemic dressing, Miu Miu AW21 marries familiarity with vulnerability; element-proof outerwear in fun-loving colours appeared alongside barely there woollen bralettes, while ski onesies were worn layered atop new-found alpine lingerie. “Intentions are multiple, like the diverse identities found within each woman,” notes the House. Miuccia Prada simultaneously straddles pre- and post-lockdown fashion by creating a collection comfortable enough for those that have yet to venture out, and audacious enough for those bursting into the new world with reckless abandon.
Pastel puffers and spirited hues add Miu Miu’s playful edge to outerwear, while slips and seductive silhouettes borrowed from the fantasies of lingerie are executed with heavy wool, crochet and chunky knits for cooler climes. Larger-than-life faux fur boots and matching gloves envelop models’ limbs - no doubt a welcome addition given the temperatures - while delicate embroidery tips the scales towards femininity.
Firmly planted between utilitarianism and experimentation, Miu Miu AW21 beautifies necessity, its garments representing resilience in the face of the unknown and will undoubtedly be our sub-zero hero come winter days spent on the slopes. Miuccia Prada feeds our hunger for post-pandemic maximalism with a sprinkle of sequins and easy-to-wear embellishments that we have been unjustly starved of during the time of which we will not speak, successfully steering us away from lockdown loungewear and laid-back palettes. “It is about escape, about dreaming – making fantasy a reality,” shares Prada. The collection provides a much-needed breath of crisp alpine air, bringing colour to both our cheeks and wardrobes.
Miu Miu AW21 was captured on film by Benjamin Kracun and, ultimately, was a film about community and collective strength. The film culminated in Miu Miu-clad models – likely frost-bitten – gathering together to gaze into a dancing campfire signifying that, like embers rising from the ashes, there is hope for us yet in the brave new world.
