Fashion shows don't get more magical than the one staged by Alessandro Michele for Gucci Cosmogonie. The Gucci Cruise 2023 collection took place at Castel del Monte, a 13th-century castle in Italy's Andria imbued with symbolism. The octagonal structure sits 540 meters above sea level where it is constantly bathed in sunlight - and, for this particular event, the light of a post-eclipse full moon. Not only did Gucci utilise the World Heritage Site as a glorious backdrop for the collection, but the House is supporting its enhancement in order to sustain, preserve and promote artistic heritage.
Although connected to the cosmos and an ode to German philosopher Walter Benjamin, whose troubled life Alessandro recounts in the evening's show notes, the collection itself is an amalgamation of influences. The medieval setting is echoed in faux-fur coats, gladiator shoes and harlequin prints; sequinned playsuits, sheer gowns and lashings of leather conjure up seventies raves; the Renaissance makes an appearance via ruffs, pearls and velvet gowns; all punctuated by crystal-studded constellation references.
