Monte-Carlo has long served as inspiration for Chanel: Gabrielle Chanel discovered the Principality of Monaco in 1910 and, in 1988, Karl Lagerfeld purchased Villa La Vigie as a summer escape. “Monaco is inherent to the history of Chanel. We have lived so many happy moments there,” explained Virginie Viard in the show notes. Now, Viard captures the spirit of the Riviera for Chanel Cruise 2022/23 where sophistication and freedom (and the Formula One) come together to represent the modern Chanel woman.

The collection was unveiled under the Mediterranean sun at the Monte-Carlo Beach Hotel where models strutted on the sand and along the pier, both of which were dotted with spectators perched on sunloungers. “From very early on, I knew we would hold a show [in Monaco], and more precisely at the Beach Hotel. Besides, Karl was dreaming about it. From this magnificent venue, one can glimpse his villa, La Vigie,” continued Viard.

Monaco itself inspired elements of the collection and Monegasque pastimes – most notably the Grand Prix – are celebrated with black-and-white checkers splashed across swimwear and separates as well as racing jumpsuits fashioned from tweed. Elsewhere, graphic tees, embellished caps and colourful minis make Chanel Cruise 2022/23 a dream for days spent exploring while romantic lace skirts and billowing dresses are perfect for sunset strolls.

Whimsical accessories complete the collection, from statement jewellery and Chanel helmets to bags that are as much conversation pieces as collector’s items – slot machine handbag, anyone? See the collection in the gallery above and watch the show here.
