Embellishments, bows and ruffles galore graced the catwalk at Chanel’s haute couture show

On day two of Haute Couture fashion week in Paris, Chanel took over Palais Garnier to showcase its theatrical, opera-inspired AW24 haute couture collection. Although it was initially due to be Virginie Viard’s final collection at the House, it was instead completed by Chanel’s in-house Fashion Creation Studio. The role of artistic director has yet to be filled.

The collection is an homage to the Maison’s long-standing relationship with the Opera – it has been a patron of Opéra National de Paris since 2003 – and the elegance of the art of dance. The opulence of the opera is mirrored in the collection’s details, from rich embroidery to Renaissance-inspired ruffles and voluminous capes, while tulle skirts evoking tutus ensured the reference was front-and-centre.

Though more avant-garde and extravagant than previous haute couture collections, house codes were evident though metallic-tweed suiting and the now-emblematic black bow, the latter of which was affixed to models’ belts, skirts and hair. Rewatch the show
