3 Ways to Make AW15’s Avian Inspired Trend Work

We saw it at Gucci in giant embroidered motifs, at Rodarte with tendrils of feathers and at Givenchy in printed peacock blooms, avian-inspired fashion is the trend to look out for this autumn/winter 2015, and here’s why.

Appliqué

Alessandro Michele married his quirky aesthetic with high drama for his new-season Gucci muse. Birds were fully realised in embroidered appliqué motifs, (above) mimicking the silhouette of a daring plunge gown. We saw the trend at Céline, as Phoebe Philo applied literal feathers on a cutaway dress, and at Diane von Furstenberg too who journeyed strategically placed black swallows across sheer red lace.

Feathers

Feathered frocks were seen flurrying down the runway of Proenza Schouler, as duo Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez hit the mark with their tribal warrior woman. The Rodarte sisters took on a romantic approach with tufts of flyaway feathers forming the skirts of the show’s barely-there sequin slip dresses. Meanwhile Alber Elbaz added even more drama at Lanvin, showcasing contrast white feathers against it’s deeply dark runway.

There were Hitchcockian vibes all over the autumn/winter 2015 runways, and none more so than at Rochas as Alessandro Dell’Acqua printed swarms of contrast black swallows across forms. Valentino adopted a wearable approach to all-over feathers with a dress in a head-to-toe digital gradient feather print. At Givenchy it was all about the majestic peacock with a print that motioned its way around gathered shirt dresses.
