The region is rich with artists; unique perspectives and stereotype-smashing artworks have solidified the Middle East's status as a hub of creativity. Taking part in creating awareness around regional talents is ICD Brookfield Place, whose annual graphic design and poster exhibition, Tasmeem, showcases regional works in the heart of DIFC. Tasmeem champions both established and up-and-coming artists and encourages conversation around the arts and graphic design through a competition where 12 applicants are awarded the opportunity to display their work as part of a month-long exhibition.
This year's theme, developed by designer and artist Mariam AlZayani, is 'De-sign Scrapyard: An ode to lost ideas, unfinished thoughts, and could-have-beens.' It challenges designers to reflect on their previous works and breathe new life into discarded or forgotten designs from their archives, transforming them from their original context into brand-new works of art and allowing them to create new endings to an existing story.
An esteemed committee of experts including Special Projects Director at Alserkal Advisory Fiza Akram; Graphic Designer, Calligrapher and Winner of Tasmeem’s first edition Ibrahim Khamayseh; and Designer and Researcher Imad Gebrayel select the 12 winners who, along with having their works shown at ICD Brookfield Place, receive a cash prize. 15 June to 31 August, ICD Brookfield Place, DIFC, Dubai.
