Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim presents an explosion of colour inspired by the flora and fauna of his own back yard
Local artist Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim is hosting his third third exhibition at Alserkal’s Lawrie Shabibi gallery, Embryonic Coat, and it is a collection of creative concepts in technicolour. Described as exploring the ‘manifestation of the known, experienced or imagined as constrained within rudimentary forms’, it runs concurrently with the artist’s major new installation for The National Pavilion UAE at the 59th Venice Biennale, Between Sunrise and Sunset — a room-filling sculpture made from 128 abstract and organic elements in his signature medium of papier-mâché.
Inspired by the old trees, flower beds and potted plants in his home’s garden, he has repeated, reconfigured and recoloured them as paintings, murals and papier-mâché sculptures emerging as organic, plant-like forms which came to light through weeks of experimentation.
