Button Up: Chanel Unveils A New Collection Of Secret Timepieces

The Mademoiselle Privé Bouton collection draws inspiration from Gabrielle Chanel’s beloved buttons

First introduced in 2012, Chanel’s Mademoiselle Privé watch collection pays homage to Gabrielle Chanel’s signature styles and symbols; from camellias to comets. For 2020, the house’s watchmaking studio has revealed seven new watches dedicated to an essential component of Gabrielle Chanel's stylistic world: the button.

Inspired by sailor's uniforms, Gabrielle Chanel developed a love for the humble fastener — which has become a key signature of Chanel. Punctuating suits and accessories, the button grew into a beloved embellishment for the maison and is still used to decorate designs today.

Entitled Mademoiselle Privé Bouton, the new wristwear collection features gold-trimmed, black woven tweed cuffs which are fastened by a hallmark button. The buttons — either a pearl, a carved gold lion, a camellia or Mademoiselle’s portrait — each represent a motif close to the heart of the house and Gabrielle Chanel herself, from her favourite bloom to her star sign.

Beneath each elevated button, lies a hidden timepiece — a small diamond-set secret waiting to be discovered. The collection also unveils two high jewellery iterations of the watch; one in black lacquer with a diamond-trim and an exquisite, one-of-a-kind honeycomb structure covered in sparkling stones.

Rich in symbolism, the Mademoiselle Privé Bouton collection combines classic design with exceptional craftsmanship to create a stunning secret watch series devoted to Coco. Chanel.com
