Staycation Edit: The Fairmont Fujairah Beach Resort

4 min read

Nestled within the UAE's Hajar mountains and boasting a Willow Stream Spa and the local favourite Copper Lobster restaurant, the Fairmont Fujairah is a charming weekend escape.

Just a 90-minute drive from Dubai International Airport and 180 minutes from Abu Dhabi, Fujairah is a distinctly calmer and more authentic emirate. The climate is very slightly cooler and well worth a visit for a two-three day break-away from the buzz of city life. In hospitably, the focus falls to small-scale luxury resorts, favoured by couples and families who are looking for down time in more credible settings as opposed to the uber extravagance of neighbouring Dubai.

The sea front boasts some household names, but nestled further in to Dibba’s coastline is The Fairmont Resort and Spa. Less than two years old, the resort prides itself as the emirates’s only art inspired destination with Middle Eastern art inspired designs decorating the walls and contemporary Arabic architecture, reminiscent of an Arabic souk.

Views are stunning. To the front of the hotel sits the towering and majestic Hajar Mountains, and at the back lies the endless open waters of the Gulf of Oman. Tranquil to say the least.

There are only 180 guest rooms which creates a sense of familiarity throughout the resort. The F&B outlets aren’t hugely diverse, but have been well thought-out and reflect both a contemporary clientele and local nuances. Copper Lobster is undeniably the Fairmont’s highlight for evening dining, whereas Arteasan is its quaint tea lounge perfect for a mid-day pit stop. The Italian Café Pronto feels slightly off-kilter in the sea-side setting, but is in fact a delightful lunch spot and a slightly quieter hide-out.

Highlights

Copper Lobster – This seafood restaurant is by far one of the resorts most exquisite assets. Nestled back from the sea front, and designed with a tranquil, calming dining experience in mind, Copper Lobster is an ode to the Omani rock lobster found in the region’s waters. Regionally caught, the lobster has a unique, copper-like glow and forms the inspiration behind many of the restaurant’s specials. Local fisherman from Dibba’s fish markets and a specially trained consultant have been commissioned to ensure only the best daily catches make it to Copper Lobster. From tiger prawns to perfectly prepared ceviche, the menu is a feast for any fresh fish lover. Japanese influences make their way in to many of the dishes as a welcomed twist, from the Thai-Style Coconut Scallop Soup to the Soft Poached Japanese Style Diver Scallop.
MOJEH Recommends:
Starters – Trio Tarter featuring tuna, salmon and lobster with Eastern twists.
Mains – Fujairah Clay Pot Harra Lobster for a local specialty.
Dessert – Signature Lemon Chef Hat for a culinary work of art (you’re in for a surprise).

Willow Stream Spa – Dubai residence may well have visited the popular Willow Stream in The Fairmont’s Dubai property. Fujairah’s version boasts slightly less glamour, but with a more rustic and authentic charm (exactly what you’d expect from the more modest neighbouring emirate). Pure white resonates throughout the spa – which features four treatment rooms and two VIP suits – and driftwood beams marry perfectly with Arabesque style lanterns and wall alcoves. Stepping in to the spa is relaxing in itself. The space feels large but intimate and you will rarely pass other guests, even in the relaxation areas. Separate male and female facilities include traditional hammam, sauna, steam rooms and now beauty salons.
MOJEH Recommends: The Five Element Aroma Massage draws from both Eastern and Western rituals to tackle relaxation of both the body and mind. Choose from a selection of oils representing the Five Elements of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water each designed to bring you health and vitality.

Willow Stream Spa

For the adventure seeker – Fujairah is the UAE’s only emirate that is almost completely mountainous. While its beaches are still well worth exploring, the Hajar Mountains are a glorious site with their large, towering canyons and a colour palette that moves from sand tones and beige to milky browns. Thousands of year’s worth of wear and tear can be seen etched in to its great peaks, with a stunning marble effect visible throughout. Simply a drive through them on the way to the resort is a treat, but a hiking trail creates even better memories.
MOJEH Recommends: Speak to the resort about their guided mountain bike tours, jogging and hiking trails. Depending on the time of year, it’s a more enjoyable and experiential way to explore the Hajar mountains.

The hotel faces both the Gulf of Oman and the Hajar Mountains
