As far as beauty products go, facial mists seem to have flown under the radar up until now, but with more and more luxury cosmetic brands now incluing them in their collections and e-tailers like Net-A-Porter dedicating an entire section of their beauty store to them, it looks like they’re finally about to get their well-deserved big break. We explore the different functions of these versatile sprays and the host of benefits they have on the skin.

Uses:

Apply facial mists to cleansed and toned skin to aid the absorption of moisturisers and serums.

Spritz a mist onto the skin before applying a face mask to act as a sealant and lock in hydration.

Spraying a mist on top of make up will help to set a look and keep make up fresh for longer

If touching up make up throughout the day, spray a small amount of mist onto the face and work gently into skin. This will make it easier to blend in a fresh layer of make up.

Being exposed to air conditioned environments such as offices and aircrafts for long periods of time severely dehydrate the skin, a liberal spray of facial mist every few hours will help to combat this and keep skin hydrated.

Base Benefits:

Facial sprays can be divided into three main categories based on their base ingredients, with their composition affecting the type of benefits they have on one’s skin.

Mists that use mineral water as a base, such as Evian’s Mineral Water Spray have a neutral PH, which makes them compatible with all skin types. An excellent entry point into the world of mists, these sprays are perfect for hydrating and toning the skin. Pack a travel sized one in your carry-on luggage when travelling to top up your skin’s hydration levels while flying or keep one at your desk to counter-act the dehydrating effects of an air conditioned office.

Hydrosol facial mists contain extracts from plants, herbs and flowers and are specially formulated to give your complexion a healthy glow as well as improve skin tone and elasticity. Look for mists that contain plant extracts that will have an aromatherapy effect such as lavender oil.

As the term suggests, fruit based mists incorporate fruit oils and extracts which are blended with vitamins and minerals to have a vast range of benefits including age prevention and correcting imperfections.
