This is how you master retro waves

One of the biggest beauty trends to come out of the 2018 Emmy Awards was deeply parted classic Hollywood curls. Regardless of hair length, celebrities like Kate McKinnon, Madelaine Petsch, Chrishell Hartley, Heidi Klum, Natalia Dyer, Kristine Leahy, Scarlett Johansson and Lauren Zima all showcased the style in their own way.

Celebrity hairstylist Gregory Russell for Marc Anthony True Professional was responsible for Natalia Dyer’s glamorous mane, and said he wanted to enhance the Stranger Things stars’ sophisticated look by creating a classic wave that was incredibly polished.

To get the look, Russell prepped Natalia’s wet hair with a frizz cream (Russell used the Marc Anthony True Professional Bye.Bye Frizz Blow Dry Cream) from mid-strand to ends to ensure the hair was smooth, hydrated and held bounce. He then created a deep side part and blow-dried her hair using a round bristle brush. Next, he took small sections around the face and used the ghd Platinum+ Styler to create S-waves to frame her face. According to Russell, he used a flatiron rather than a curling tong because he wanted the hair around the face to be a bit flatter and more relaxed.

For the rest of her hair, Russell curled using the ghd curve classic curl iron away from the face, spraying each section with hairspray as he went. He counted to 15 seconds and then removed the section from the iron and pin curled to cool. This allows the waves to last and hold their shape. After the hair was cooled, he removed the clip one section at a time starting in the back at the nape of the head. Next, he sprayed a brush with hairspray and brushed through each section to give the waves that soft, classic feel.
