We have the French language to thank for so many fashion-centric words: chic, elegant, a la mode, and haute couture in all its glory. Naturally, these descriptives and more are applied to Paris Fashion Week. Each year, fashion enthusiasts descend the capital for a masterclass in sartorial excellence, what to keep their eyes peeled for the upcoming season and what is decidedly dismissed.
Everything you need to know about Paris Fashion Week
Paris Fashion Week has long been hailed as the holy grail of fashion events.
We’re all aware of the power Paris possesses and its cosmic grasp on the world of la mode. Fondly known as one of the “Big Four,” it offers something that London, New York and Italy do not. A je ne sais quoi if you will. So, what is it all about? How many times a year is PFW? And which industry-changing designers can we expect to see this year?
What is Paris Fashion Week?
City of Lights, City of Love, and undisputed fashion leader, Paris Fashion Week is a bi-annual display of the highest level of fashion and innovation. Two categories uphold the PFW umbrella: Prêt-À-Porter, known as Womenswear, and Menswear. Spectators glimpse the trends that will spearhead the next season’s style.
History of Paris Fashion Week - How Did It All Start?
Since the 17th century, Paris has been an epicentre for emerging trends and the spirit of vanguard fashion. The industry of art, culture, and, of course, fashion has been integral to the French economy.
The first recorded défilé, “The Battle of Versailles,” occurred in 1973. Designed initially to raise funds for the restoration of the Palace of Versailles, this so-called competitive war marked the first time American and French designers collaborated. 5 French and 5 American designers were chosen. France was boldly represented by Yves Saint Laurent, Emanuel Ungaro, Pierre Cardin, Hubert de Givenchy, and Marc Bohan for Christian Dior. Anne Klein, Halston, Oscar de la Renta, Bill Blass and Stephen Burrows exhibited the creme de la creme of American fashion. It was also the first time that Prêt-à-Porter, Haute Couture and menswear collections were presented together.
Since then, it has become regarded as one of the most prestigious events in the fashion sphere, beckoning industry leaders from around the world to attend.

Most significant shows, runways, and presentations are held in the Carrousel du Louvre museum.

Best-dressed celebrities at the 2024 Paris Fashion Week
Year after year, the Hollywood elite always delivers. From twists on beloved classics to polarising pieces, here are our best-dressed celebrities at the 2024 Paris Fashion Week A/W edition.
Jennifer Lawrence
Jennifer Lawrence embodied effortlessly chic Parisian style in a smoky three-piece suit. The look was understated and seamless, paired with high-waist trousers and a plunging décolletage.
Rosalia
Rosalia looked every bit of a Motomami arriving at the Dior showcase. Sporting an all-black Dior ensemble, she was shielded from the dreary weather in a cropped puffer jacket. Combined with a high-waist, flowing skirt with slitted sides and jersey mock-neck, she added her renowned flair to the outfit.
Sydney Sweeney
The trouser-less trend is making its grand return. Then again, did it ever truly die? Miu Miu’s brand ambassador Sydney Sweeney made a statement when she opted for sequinned underwear that sparkled a silver hue over a pair of sheer black tights.
The oversized black blazer with frayed edges contrasted perfectly with the cropped black and white tank, adding another dimension to the look.
Kim Kardashian
Is this a fashion faux pas or an intentional display of allegiance? Fans and critics posed the question as Kim Kardashian posed at the Balenciaga show with the label peeking conspicuously out.
Whatever the reason, Kardashian turned heads when she displayed her classic silhouette in a sheer lace black gown. The dramatic draping sleeves and long, trailing skirt added to the moment's suspense.
Where To Watch The Paris Fashion Week Replay in the UAE?
Many of the exhibits can be found on YouTube. Paris Fashion Week has an official account with a playlist compiling all must-see runway exhibitions. Major fashion houses will upload their AW and SS shows to their YouTube channels.
How To Get Invited to Paris Fashion Week?
Due to its grandeur, the PFW défilés are reserved exclusively for journalists, professionals, and buyers. Open-to-the-public shows are, however, often offered in New York and London, with people vying to snag a seat or a ticket.
