As a part of Stella McCartney’s ‘Force of Nature’ collection for spring 2020, the designer has collaborated with famed environmental author Jonathan Safran Foer — known for his titles ‘Everything is Illuminated’ and ‘Eating Animals’ — on a capsule named after Safran Foer’s recently released book, ‘We are the Weather.’

Centred on the climate crisis, the book explores humanity’s reluctance to sacrifice comfort for the sake of the future — starting with the consequences of what we eat and how it catastrophically impacts the planet. Stella shares Safran Foer’s vision, and this season urges everyone to make small changes such as eating less meat, living more sympathetically with nature and reusing or recycling as much as possible.

In line with this eco-conscious message, the ‘We are the Weather’ capsule features garments made from sustainable fabrics; including organic cotton which excludes the use of toxic pesticides, synthetic fertilisers, or genetic engineering and promotes high working standards for farmers, organic linen made from natural fibres derived from the flax plant and regenerated cashmere, sources from pre-consumer textile waste.

The ready-to-wear collection is emblazoned with thought-provoking messages from Safran Foer’s book, including handwritten notes by the author which radiate from a sun illustration to create a unique and poignant print. T-shirts, knitwear, dresses and jumpsuits are adorned in phrases such as ‘we are entirely free to live differently’ and ’SOS.’

For a more polished look, ribbons are embroidered with powerful words and draped over sharp Savile Row tailoring — but the message remains the same, as bold graphics offer a bolder sentiment that leaves us questioning not only our fashion choices, but our way of life.
