Bottega Veneta’s autumn/winter 2020 runway show was defined by comfortable elegance, or as Daniel Lee called it in the pre-show press release, “new elegance for every eventuality.” From elongated silhouettes in new tones of scarlet, kiwi and chocolate, to luxury shearling and soft fringe detailing — here’s what to note from the AW20 show in Milan.
THE STAND-OUT TREND
Fringing is having a moment at Milan Fashion Week. The style has already been a hit at Prada and Jil Sander, but last night Bottega Veneta took fringing to a new, elongated level. The Bottega Veneta AW20 collection was embellished with fringe details, from floor-grazing hemlines to shearling chunky coats and knitwear, there was even fringing on the new covetable folder-over pouch bag. Other notable trends included understated sequin dresses, sweater dresses and trench coats.
THE ACCESSORIES
Over the past few seasons, square-toe shoes and soft quilted pouch bags have catapulted Bottega Veneta to It brand status — so, what can we expect to see on the streets next season? For AW20, Daniel Lee offered a new take on the beloved pouch which nows comes in soft wool, woven with fringe detailing and in a new shade of kiwi green. Square-toes became more robust with chunky, Western-style boots adding edge to sparkling dresses, and wellington-esque boots made a surprise appearance in neon green and bright pink.
THE SET
For the set design, Daniel Lee was driven my two main focal points: theatre and sustainability. Firstly, he wanted the runway to transport guests to another time and space, reflecting fashion’s ability to carry its wearer into another realm. Inspired by ancient Greece, columns and classical statues were projected onto white screens while a soothing live cello and violin set the mood. The space was designed to be recyclable, as Lee consciously considered the amount of waste each show creates and instead opted to use technology to reduce environmental impact.
