Summer Escape Edit: Bab Al Shams Dubai

3 min read

The charm of Bab Al Shams Dubai lies in its authentic and traditional approach. Here's why a step away from ultra-modern is a good thing.

Traditional stone exterior and forte-like architecture awaits visitors at Bab Al Shams Dubai. The resort is set within the thick of the beautiful desert landscape – orange sand dunes and date trees aplenty. Surprisingly so, considering it’s just a 45-minute drive outside the ultra-modern city of Dubai.

This is another time and place, and one in which you’ll be hard pressed to leave.

Bab Al Shams is one of the region’s oldest resorts, but that’s what makes it so charming. There’s no overzealous, new-age party tricks or ultra modern design. Instead, think long winding path-ways, true Arabian decor and an easy-going vibe which melds luxury with simple pleasures. Rooms are cosy, bathrooms are splendid with Hamman style showers, and terrace areas look out across the sparse, golden desert.

While cooling off in the infinity pool is a must, Bab Al Shams also reminds guests that adventure in the UAE is just as possible as relaxation. From early morning dune bashing in four wheel drives to sunset bike riding and archery lessons, there’s plenty to keep the family entertained for a full week. MOJEH recommends an early sunset start enjoying a desert activity, followed by a luscious and long, lazy breakfast amidst the souk style courtyard setting. Finally, a late morning siesta besides the pool or in the more intimate setting of your own terrace area.

The resort is located in the thick of the Dubai desert, and so activities such as desert drives are the perfect opportunity to spot the region’s wildlife

The set-up insists guests indulge in plenty of relaxation. Whether you prefer to kick back in your private terrace area, play a board game in the Bedouin style squares or enjoy a sunset drink from one of the resort’s look out points, there are plenty of places to while away the day. The Satori Spa may well be one if its best assets. Try tearing yourself away from the gentle sound of Satori’s water feature set outside its relaxation area. Take your book and block out life for a few hours. Or, embark on a couple’s massage in an open-air treatment room (weather permitting).

If seeking relaxation during your break, the Satori Spa makes for the perfect place to while away a day or two

In a landscape where uber-modern and bald-faced luxury take center stage, Bab Al Shams rustic and authentic charm is a quiet reminder of the true treasures to be unearthed in the UAE. Think raw, unhindered sunsets; genuine and personable service; the charm of arabesque tradition, and much more.

  • MOJEH Recommends
  • The Satori Spa’s Blissful Desert Rose Experience. Start with a full body exfoliation before moving on to a body wrap, massage and facial. End with a calming head massage. At three hours long, there’s plenty of time to relax, unwind and reset
  • From Le Dune’s Italian twists to Al Forsan’s all day dining, culinary options across the resort draw in day guests from Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Bab Al Shams’ Indian restaurant Masala focuses on cuisine from the North, and is arguably the resort’s culinary highlight. Think meat submersed in tantalising spices and traditional drinks from the continent.  A must-visit during your stay
  • Early morning archery is the perfect way to catch beautiful views of the desert while trying your hand at something new
