From '70s-inspired curved couches to the resurgence of terrazzo, these 2019 home design trends will leave you ready to redecorate.
Forget statement walls, this year it’s all about statement ceilings with printed wallpaper, exposed beams and vibrant shades packing a serious design punch. If you decide to go down the printed wallpaper route, try choosing one that incorporates the same hue as your walls to create an uninterrupted, cohesive flow.
The return of terrazzo
Move over marble because 2019 is the year of terrazzo. Originating in Italy over 500 years ago, the composite material of marble, quartz, granite, glass and other stone chippings set into cement was created as a way to reuse the scrapped rock. Once the fragments are set, the surface is then polished to create a super-smooth finish. The playful, confetti-like material can be used to cover everything from floors to kitchen benches.
Night Watch green
Dubbed the go-to paint colour for 2019 by PPG Paints, Night Watch is a rich green hue that’s inspired by nature. “Night Watch is about bringing the healing power from the outdoors into your home through colour,” explained Dee Schlotter, PPG senior colour marketing manager. “The dark green hue pulls our memories of natural environments to the surface to recreate the calming, invigorating euphoria we feel when in nature.” The versatile shade works best in small doses and looks great with high-shine finishes and elements.
For the last few years, the design world has been fixated on geometric lines and sleek, sharp edges, but this year is painting a much softer picture. From circular swivel chairs to curvy sofas, 2019 is all about embracing a more shapely design aesthetic, especially when it comes to soft furnishings.
Gone are the days of all monochromatic metals and matching fixtures. Whether you choose to pair brass with chrome, copper with yellow gold, or rose gold with stainless steel, the key to nailing this trend is to create a cohesive look by choosing one dominant metal and complementing it with a few different metal accents.
