An Andy Warhol Exhibition Is Coming To Saudi Arabia

2 min read

The one-of-a-kind exhibition will showcase over 70 Andy Warhol works, from prints and paintings to archival pieces

AlUla has successfully solidified its reputation as a cultural destination and the calendar is already filling up for 2023. Case in point? An exclusive Andy Warhol exhibition. Brought to the Kingdom by AlUla Moments and The Andy Warhol Museum, FAME: Andy Warhol in AlUla will take place as part of the annual Arts AlUla festival. Taking over Maraya, the mirror-clad structure that has captivated social media, the exhibition celebrates the renowned artist and investigates his fascination with fame – an interest born from childhood dreams of escapism – through his beloved works. In addition to Warhol’s famed paintings and prints of Hollywood stars, sporting legend and musicians, Fame: Andy Warhol in AlUla also showcases filmed portraits of ’60s icons, archival photographs and the ground-breaking artwork Silver Clouds, and will host publicly accessible panel discussions, workshops and masterclasses.

Although centred around celebrity, the exhibition simultaneously recognises the illusory and complicated nature of fame that Warhol came to understand as he became more and more successful. “FAME is intended to be an introduction to the aspect of Warhol that I believe is most fascinating to many young people, including Saudi youth, as Andy Warhol’s journey, which started as a child staring at the movie screen and collecting publicity stills, is becoming more common through the rise of social media,” explains director of The Andy Warhol Museum, Patrick Moore. The Andy Warhol Museum is a world-famous institution credited with possessing the largest archive of Warhol’s works. It is only fitting, then, that the exhibition take place in an ancient city that has acted as a historic crossroad and hub of artistic exchange for thousands of years. “We aim to drive a new era of cultural exchange, including exhibitions that feature the most important regional and international artists from the mid 20th century to the present day,” explains Nora Aldabel, executive director of arts and creative industries for Arts AlUla.

Andy Warhol was instrumental in the pop culture movement that swept the 1960s and kick-started a creative-driven era of change and transformation; this era is echoed in Saudi Arabia’s current creative landscape, where voices of the Kingdom’s creatives are being amplified and nurtured like never before through festivals and cultural programmes including those hosted at AlUla.
