Go behind the scenes of Zendaya’s collaboration with Tommy Hilfiger. She dissects the process, what she’s learned and what inspired the Tommy X Zendaya capsule collection…
During Paris Fashion Week, Tommy Hilfiger unveiled one of the brand’s most anticipated capsule collections yet.
From teaming up with Gigi Hadid on a four-season stretch that took us around the globe to racing around the track with Lewis Hamilton’s athletic-meets-streetwear capsule range, the American house has tapped Zendaya as the brand’s next global women’s ambassador.
Whilst no one really knew what to expect, the duo made just as big of a mark. At PFW,an achingly cool and spunky collection that unfolded on the runway.
Winning the world over was Tommy X Zendaya’s approach to celebrating diversity through the ‘70s-inspired collection. Whilst looking towards the “powerful women and fashion icons of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s”, the singer/actress managed to capture the essence of the disco era with zodiac-printed suits, high-waisted skirts, oversized belts, knit sweaters and plaid trousers – giving us major disco fever.
The striking silhouettes from the collaborative capsule collection have topped our wish-lists. Plus, they boast a powerful message – whether through the rich colour palette, the rainbow stripes or the timeless appeal. And that was a key focus for the actress. “The most important thing to me is that these clothes feel timeless and whoever puts it on feels powerful and confident. I really appreciate how Tommy and his entire team really allowed Law and I to have complete creative freedom. They gave us the support we needed to create our vision, and they executed it perfectly.”
Even though being very involved in the design process, the overall experience taught the 22-year-old a plethora of new learnings. “I’ve learned about what it really takes to make a garment. Even something as simple as a plain white tee takes so much more time, people and energy then you’d think, and every job is crucial.”
When it came to working right underneath the man himself, Zendaya learned that Tommy Hilfiger is a leader by example. “He shows how to have longevity in your career by always staying true to your brand and sharing your knowledge but also never being afraid to reinvent or embrace young voices and creatives to always stay relevant.”
Ahead of the duo’s debut show, the brand released a slew of captivating images with Zendaya fronting the collection herself. When asked what it was like shooting the campaign, the actress replied: “A dream. Literally, I’ve been dreaming about it and have had the pleasure of watching it come to fruition.”
