Transeasonal Dressing: Return of The Mac

A classic trench coat is a sartorial staple

This wardrobe staple carries serious mileage, the history of the trench coat dates as far back as the 19th century. It was circa 1850 when both Aquascutum and Burberry began to flirt with the concept, both introducing water resistant fabrics and applying them to functional outerwear.

Acquascutum was founded by John Emary and the name aptly derives from the latin words ‘aqua’ (water) and ‘scutum’ (shield). While Thomas Burberry invented the waterproof twill fabric we know as garbadine.

More stylish versions have since earned their fashion stripes with everyone from the likes of Humphrey Bogart, Marlene Dietrich and Audrey Hepburn, to Meryl Streep and Sienna Miller stepping out in versions of the now wardrobe hero.

Tap the modern trench trend in linen or leather

Trench coats have also become a seasonal mainstay both on and off the catwalk. Just last week the fashion crowd were spotted hot-footing from one show to the next wearing array of different trench coats.

With its casual fit and practical qualities – they are essentially wind and shower proof – alongside its cult status, all you have to decide is which, of the many modern style iterations, you’d like to try.

So, take your cues from the streets of Fashion Week where transitional trenches proved an easy solution to dressing for unpredictable weather. Easily layered over a dress or denim, we’ve rounded up our top five trends, as well as an edit of the best styles available to buy now.

1.CLASSIC

Pair a tan trench with reworked animal prints

A classic, double breasted trench is a must in every wardrobe. It can fall anywhere between cream and rich caramel in the colour charts, most loiter around fawn and beige. Oozing longevity, this is the ultimate transeasonal buy.

2.COLOUR

Brighten up your ensemble with a burst of yellow

Autumn/winter always needs a colour injection. You can go top-to-toe tonal for a subdued look, layer contrasting autumnal colours or go all-out with bright sunshine hues. Trainers just add a more playful edge.

3.HIGH FASHION

The PVC trench is not for the fashionably faint hearted. It still retains all those practical qualities, though. And it has the added bonus of revealing whatever you’re wearing underneath. So remember, what’s on the inside counts, too.

4.CONTEMPORARY

For something still quintessentially timeless but with a modern twist, opt for a mac which pays tribute to this season’s affection for plaid. Whether Houndstooth, a Prince of Wales check, or something more reminiscent of 90s grunge, there are so many options out there, we’re sure you’ll find your checkmate.

5.DECADENT

Layered leather adds a luxe touch to any look

Leather is proving one of this season’s most luxurious trends. Buttery-soft leather which is so opulent in its impracticality, has given the trench coat its most glamorous make-over yet. This one is definitely worth a place on your wishlist.
