With swimwear the uniform of summer, stock up on style points while supporting regional designers. Here, MOJEH talks to designer Lèa Daaboul

Lebanese-American yoga instructor and entrepreneur Léa Daaboul spent time in Paris, Rome and New York before settling in Dubai. Calling herself a “worldwide resident”, her passions for art, travel, wellbeing and the ocean combine in her namesake swimwear label — a chic and conscious marriage of minimalism and sustainability.

What inspired you to embark on your journey with Léa the Label?

After I finished university in Paris with a degree in fashion design and had work experience in the luxury industry, I was inspired by my travels and experiences around the world to start something new. I have a strong appreciation for culture, art, style, sustainability and yoga, all of which have played a part in the birth of the brand. We manufacture our collections responsibly in Bali — it’s one of my preferred serene islands to unwind and recharge in, and is a place where yoga, beach culture and sustainable visions are common.

In what ways is sustainability part of your brand’s DNA?

Since the very beginning, we have made the choice to use regenerative materials to minimise environmental impact. We are committed to a cradle-to-cradle system that benefits the Earth by using fabric created from ocean waste plastic in the forms of salvaged fishing gear or other materials polluting our water, in collaboration with Econyl. While it is challenging to be 100 per cent sustainable, we strive to do better every day by partnering with the right organisations who share the same values as us, and we make considered choices about the materials we use within our line. Just recently, we partnered with CleanHub and ecoBali Recycling to enable the safe collection and recovery of ocean-bound plastic. We are proud to be part of a community of conscious brands who help collect plastic waste before it can enter our precious ecosystem.

What is special about the swimwear textiles that you use?

We use luxe, eco-friendly Italian fabrics in collaboration with Econyl. Our swim textiles are resistant to chlorine and sun-tan oils. They are UV protective and feel ultra smooth, ensuring the best fit and long-lasting wear. Additionally, to reduce our carbon footprint, we make the conscious effort to use Global Organic Textile Standard-certified organic or natural fabrics and plant-based dyes for our ready-to-wear resort collections, to ensure longevity and support a regenerative agricultural practice.

Can you describe some of your favourite swimwear trends and designs for SS24?

My favourite new style is our Calico set, it’s a staple piece and perfect for those island escapes. I have also been gravitating towards the colour red this season, as well as our Horizon Blue shade that reflects beautifully under the sun and crystal-clear water. Available at Selfridges, Bloomingdales Middle East and online
