Kate Johanson

From the best evening-wear for Iftar’s to this month’s It shoe, Shopbop’s associate fashion director, Kate Johanson, shares her style musts for the month of May

The It Bag to covet this month.
It’s all about the mini handhelds for summer – the smaller the bag, the better. Bracelet bags are my favourite. Their structure makes them feel feminine and sophisticated but still fun.

The It Shoe…
Undoubtably the kitten heel sling back. They’re both feminine and comfortable which makes them a winner.

The hue to play colour-block with…
We’re obsessed with all shades of green – whether an olive green, kelly green or mint – it’s a hue that always feels fresh and looks great on everyone.

New design talent to have on your radar…
A personal favourite of mine, Tata Naka, just launched. The only thing that’s better than this Georgian brand’s cool silhouettes are the punchy prints used each season. I’ll be living in their pieces this month.

Denim brand to covet…
R13’s Spring/Summer collection is what dreams are made of! The denim brand has evolved themselves from a casual denim line to a fashion force in women’s ready-to-wear. The western influences were right-on trend without feeling costume-like, with mixed florals and plaids, unique bodies imitating aprons, prairie skirts and of course, dungaree embellishments.

Go-to designer for refined and sophisticated Ramadan style…
Adam Lippes designs are effortlessly feminine and timeless. His separates are the perfect balance between unique and classically modest.

Go-to designers for Iftar appropriate evening-wear…
We love a floor-sweeping statement skirt, or a beautiful dress with an interesting texture or print. There are beautiful options from Preen by Thornton Bregazzi and Alice & Olivia to start with. A favourite also has to be Rococo Sands – their matching blue and white printed top and maxi skirt look beautifully polished and demure for Iftar evenings.

How can we work black in to our summer wardrobes…
Easily! Have fun with textures and don’t be afraid to pair black with pastel accessories or floral accents.

Swimwear designer of 2018…
Lisa Marie Fernandez. But not only for swimwear, Lisa’s cover-ups and resort dresses are also meant to be lived in all summer long.

Key sunglasses trend for 2018…
While a narrow sunny can look intimidating at first, the retro frames are a must have this season. There are a variety of shapes and sizes that can flatter any face, it may just take a bit of exploration.

The biggest print trend this month…
A wallpaper floral in either a ditsy or brocade inspired pattern.

Kate’s Five Minutes On Dubai…
Favourite restaurant: Maine. It’s my first dinner stop every time I’m in town. I dream about that mushroom truffle pizza and rigatoni pasta!
Best beach spot: El Chiringuito on The Palm. It has to be one of the best places to soak up some sun, and take a dip in the ocean.
Place for R&R: I love sitting by the pool at Five on The Palm for a relaxing breakfast before starting my day.
Exploration spots: Everywhere! From concept boutiques in D3, to discovering new restaurants in DIFC, there’s so much to see. The next time I’m in Dubai, I’m excited to explore more of the historic areas, the old souks and creekside to get a dose of ‘old Dubai’.
Go-to shoes: The blocked heel mule from Trademark. They’re super comfortable but keep my look smart and put together.
Go-to bag: Loving the Alexander Wang bum bag. This bag is a lifesaver to sling on when running around and exploring.
