This installation bridges past and future

Prada’s prestigious cultural event series, Prada Mode, is set to make its highly anticipated return to Abu Dhabi, with an extraordinary two-day experience taking place at MiZa in Mina Zayed on 11 and 12 February. The event marks a significant milestone in the House’s ongoing collaboration with renowned multidisciplinary artist Theaster Gates, delivering a thought-provoking exploration of art, music, and heritage at the heart of the UAE’s cultural landscape.

This iteration, the third collaboration between Prada and Gates, presents an immersive installation that bridges past and future, reflecting Gates’ deep engagement with the intersection of contemporary technology and time-honoured traditions. The Prada Mode Abu Dhabi experience will be defined by a striking duality - fusing the quiet reverence of historic craft with the vibrancy of live performances. The MiZa space, reimagined as a platform for creativity, will house two distinct atmospheres: one centred around acoustic music, offering a moment of introspection and spiritual connection, and another characterised by the lively energy of DJ sets and live performances.

A central cylindrical structure will divide the space, allowing for two separate realms that reflect the opposing energies. Within the inner space, the acoustic music sets, curated by Gates and NTS, will create an intimate environment for contemplation, while the exterior zone will foster a more boisterous atmosphere, offering an experience of dynamic sound and movement. The sonic programming will embody Gates' exploration of the tension between modern technological advancements and the soulful resonance of the human spirit.

Reflecting on the theme of the event, Gates says, “As we increasingly exist in a world where computer-generated possibilities govern our reality, my concept for Prada Mode Abu Dhabi is an homage to our interiority, the human hand, and our spiritual contributions to the rich cultural histories of this region.” His deep respect for the region’s heritage, coupled with his conceptual grounding in Shintoism and animism, allows Gates to craft a space that honours the sacred, the creative, and the individual.

Prada Mode Abu Dhabi will also shine a spotlight on the invaluable contributions of Arab women to the cultural and creative sectors, with programming curated by Myrna Ayad. The event will feature performances, talks, and conversations showcasing the work of local and regional talent, celebrating the diversity, creativity, and intelligence of the Arab world. Alongside this, a carefully curated culinary offering by celebrated chef Salam Daqqaq will honour the flavours of Abu Dhabi’s diverse diasporic communities, creating a gastronomic experience that complements the event’s cultural richness.

The first two days will see Prada Mode Abu Dhabi operate as an exclusive members’ club, offering guests an intimate environment to experience the fusion of art, music, and heritage. From 13 February, the event will open its doors to the public, with free admission available on a first-come, first-served basis.
