“Chic nonchalance” is how Matthew M. Williams describes the Givenchy Autumn/Winter 2022 men’s and women’s ready-to-wear collections. We, on the other hand, are transported back to adolescence where graphic tees and black-on-black ensembles were wardrobe staples (which, much to our mothers’ dismay, was not a phase). Shown simultaneously, the Givenchy Autumn/Winter 2022 collections delivered a hefty dose of nostalgia combined with streetwear-focussed silhouettes – think layered tees, cropped hoodies and roomy trousers – and oversized accessories. However, Givenchy’s signature structure remained in tailored coats and formalwear while flashes of femininity came courtesy of head-to-toe sequins and ruffled dresses. Completing the gothcore aesthetic, models’ faces were minimally made-up and adorned with faux piercings.
Givenchy’s collection is predominantly black and dark green, mirroring Saint Laurent, whose Paris Fashion Week show was also a black-out, and Valentino (though half its show was in hot pink). Rewatch the show
