MOJEH talks to Noon by Noor’s Bahraini fashion designers Shaikha Noor Rashid Al Khalifa and Shaikha Haya Mohammed Al Khalifa about their cruise 2020 collection and how the brand came to be.
What inspired you to work in fashion?
Shaikha Noor: My earliest memory is my father’s art and my mother’s impeccable wardrobe.
Shaikha Haya: My extensive travels around the world.
How did the label come to be?
Shaikha Noor: I initially launched Noon By Noor in June of 2008, but realised that I wanted to be involved in every step of the design process, from concept to final product. That’s when I decided to get my educational degree first and return back to my label fully equipped.
Shaikha Haya: That’s also when I decided to join forces with Noor. Following the completion of our studies, we moved back to Bahrain and the label was reborn.
Where did you learn to design?
We both studied fashion design at Marymount University in Virginia, but applying that knowledge in real-life – to our own label – is a completely different learning experience that we live everyday.
What has inspired you for this collection?
Our Resort 2020 collection is all about delicate details and easy gathered volumes, inspired by Bahrain’s seashells and pearls. Soft, linen-blend fabrics give ease and comfort while transparent panels, ruffle sleeves, and modern pleats accent a feminine silhouette in tender ways without constraining it. We’ve also used lightweight viscose and sandwash, inspired by open spaces and sweet, brisk air, letting the collection feel both fresh, crisp and modern.
What are your favoured pieces in the collection?
It’s hard to choose, but if we had to, it would be the Pixie t-shirts with black doodle embroidery and Arabic script quoting “Pearl”. The Nottingham top in Shell Pink from Look 11 is another favourite. Cut from a beautiful techno organza with a drape scarf, pearl fastenings and gathered sleeves – it captures the inspiration very well.
Are there pieces you revisit every time?
Yes! There’s the Billie pleated skirt, the Pixie boyfriend t-shirt and the Holly boyfriend sweatshirt which have done exceptionally well since we first offered them. Since then, we’ve reintroduced them into every season with a simple update in fabric, colour, script, or even a minor fitting or pattern tweak that fits the collection’s mood.
How does this collection differ from previous seasons?
Relatively, there’s a little more softness and delicacy in this season compared to previous ones, which is in great part due to the delicate nature of our inspiration. We offset it with masculine elements and added a fresh athletic twist to some styles with the use of techno-sheen, sport nylon, elasticated waists, ankle cuffs and drawstring fastenings.
