Mere hours after Celine broke the news that Hedi Slimane was stepping down as creative director, the House announced Michael Rider would be taking his place.
Michael Rider began his career at Balenciaga under Nicolas Ghesquière before working alongside Phoebe Philo for a decade as design director of Celine. After departing the House in 2018, Rider became creative director of Polo Ralph Lauren.
Rider's role as artistic director - which he will officially begin in early 2025 - will see him absorb complete creative control of all Celine collections including womenswear, menswear, accessories and couture.
"Celine is a Maison with values very close to my heart and a beautiful heritage to build on," said Rider in a statement. Echoing the sentiment, CEO of Celine Severine Merle said: "Michael's vision and creative talent together with his genuine nature and strong connection to Celine's heritage make him a natural choice to continue to build long-lasting success for the Maison."
